One suspected Naxalite militant was killed and another wounded in an encounter with security forces in Simdega district (Jharkhand state) on Sunday morning (local time), May 17. An exchange of fire between the Maoist militants and police broke out during a search operation in the area. Five other militants have been arrested and additional security personnel have been deployed to the area following the incident.
Further clashes between Maoist insurgents and security forces are possible in the area in the near term.
Maoist insurgents (Naxalites) are active in rural/remote areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal states, as well as in the border region between Andra Pradesh and in remote parts of Bihar and West Bengal states. For this reason, restrictions on the movement of foreigners are in place for some rural areas of eastern India.
Individuals in India, particularly those in Jharkhand state, are advised to monitor developments to the situation and remain vigilant for potential militant activity, particularly if planning on traveling to rural areas of the abovementioned states.
