Local police arrested at least 19 protesters on Saturday, May 16, in London for violating coronavirus disease (COVID-19) social distancing measures. A group of individuals gathered in Hyde Park to demonstrate against the government's response to COVID-19 and the restrictions imposed. Local police were deployed to the demonstration and attempted to disperse the protesters who refused to leave; as a result, 19 individuals were arrested and a further ten people were issued fixed penalty notices. Large public gatherings remain prohibited amid the COVID-19 restrictions in place in the United Kingdom.
Further associated demonstrations cannot be ruled out in the near term.
Individuals in London are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence.
