Somalia News Alert

Al-Shabaab militant group claims responsibility for car bomb attack which kills four in Galkayo (Puntland region) on May 17

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/17/2020, 12:00 AM until 5/20/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Puntland, Galkayo

Event

Al-Shabaab militants have claimed responsibility for a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) attack that killed a Mudug governor and three bodyguards on Sunday, May 17, in Galkayo (Puntland region). Reports indicate that the governor's vehicle was hit by a tuk-tuk auto-rickshaw laden with explosives outside the Mudug municipality office.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruption are to be expected in the area over the coming hours. Additional Al-Shabaab attacks targeting Somali government authorities and facilities are possible over the coming hours and days.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia, and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Advice

Individuals in Puntland are advised to avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
