Maoist (Naxalite) fighters killed two police officers and injured three others in an encounter on Sunday morning (local time), May 17, in Gadchiroli district (Maharashtra state). An exchange of fire took place in the Poyarkoti-Koparshi forest area as security forces were carrying out an anti-Naxal operation. Local authorities estimated that between four and five Naxalite fighters were also killed in the clashes.

Further clashes between Maoist insurgents and security forces are possible in the area in the near term.


Maoist insurgents (Naxalites) are active in rural/remote areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal states, as well as in the border region between Andra Pradesh and in remote parts of Bihar and West Bengal states. For this reason, restrictions on the movement of foreigners are in place for some rural areas of eastern India.


Individuals in India, particularly those in Jharkhand state, are advised to monitor developments to the situation and remain vigilant for potential militant activity, particularly if planning on traveling to rural areas of the abovementioned states.
