Riot police clashed with a group of youths gathered in the Argenteuil suburb of Paris in the early hours of Monday morning (local time), May 18. According to reports, the individuals gathered around a housing estate in the suburb, following the death of a young man in a motorcycle accident which occurred on Sunday evening, May 17. The youths had congregated despite the current restrictions on public gatherings in place amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and they set off fireworks and set alight bins. Riot police responded firing tear gas at them.
Similar clashes cannot be ruled out in the near term.
Individuals in Paris are advised to avoid all public gatherings and demonstrations as a precaution, monitor developments and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
