Police clashed with at least 100 migrant construction workers in Ahmedabad (Gujarat state) on Monday, May 18. The protesters gathered at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IMMA) in the Vastrapur area to demand food, wages, and the right to return to their places of origin. Police moved to disperse the protesters and used tear gas after scuffles broke out and stones were thrown at security forces. At least 50 workers were detained during the incident. Additional police operations were reported in a housing area used by the workers amid a search for those responsible for the unrest. A similar incident was reported in Rajkot (Gujarat state) on Sunday, May 17, where police clashed with protesting migrant workers demanding that they be allowed to return to their states of origin amid restrictions introduced due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Further clashes and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the area over the coming days.
