The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) recorded a 5.0-magnitude earthquake in Qiaojia county (Yunnan province) at approximately 21:47 (local time) on Monday, May 18. According to CENC, the quake hit at a depth of 8 km (5 mi). At least four people were killed, 23 others were injured, and one person was trapped in debris. The earthquake was felt strongly in Huize county of Qujing city, as well as the cities of Zhaotong, Xuanwei, and Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture. Emergency response teams were deployed to the affected areas.
Aftershocks are possible in the affected areas over the coming hours and days.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
