Security forces kill at least two militants in encounter in Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir region) on May 19; further security operations expected

Security forces killed at least two militants in Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir region) on Tuesday, May 19. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) conducted a joint cordon and search operation in the Nawakadal area at approximately 02:00 (local time), after receiving intelligence on the presence of militants in the area. At least one JKP personnel was killed and a further three security personnel were injured in the clashes. Local mobile internet and voice calling services were suspended during the operation.

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions are anticipated in the area and further clashes remain possible in the near term.  


Individuals in Jammu and Kashmir territory are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

Some foreign governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Kashmir, notably including areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
