A 6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast northwest of Port Vila on May 27; aftershocks possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/27/2020, 12:00 AM until 5/29/2020, 11:59 PM (Pacific/Efate). COUNTRY/REGION Port Vila, Vanuatu


The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has recorded a 6.1 magnitude earthquake 80 km (50 mi) northwest off the coast of Port Vila on Wednesday, May 27. The quake struck at approximately 18:09 (local time) and at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). There have not been any immediate reports of casualties or infrastructural damage and no tsunami warnings have been issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
