5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes southeast of Eua Island on May 28; aftershocks possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/28/2020, 12:00 AM until 5/30/2020, 11:59 PM (Pacific/Tongatapu). COUNTRY/REGION 'Eua, Tonga


The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.9-magnitude earthquake 121 km (75 mi) southeast of Ohonua (Eua Island) on Thursday, May 28. The quake struck at approximately 20:18 (local time) at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). There have not been any immediate reports of casualties or infrastructural damage and no tsunami warnings have been issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
