Thunderstorms in Uttar Pradesh have killed at least 13 individuals and caused extensive damage to properties as of Sunday, May 31. The worst affected districts were Unnao with eight deaths, and Kannauj with five fatalities reported. The state capital, Lucknow, reported 57.4mm (2.2 inches) of rain on Saturday, the highest recorded rainfall in a single day for the city in 61 years.

Further thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds are forecast for parts of Uttar Pradesh until Monday, June 1. Associated transport and business disruptions are likely in the near term.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
