Fighting between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) militants has resulted in at least 18 killed in Djugu territory (Ituri province) on Monday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 2. According to media sources, fighting occurred on Monday in the Sodja, Gokpa, Kamutatsi, Idjui and Alusi villages. Additional fighting was reported on Tuesday in Basani which left one FARDC soldier killed and another wounded. The Congolese army reported that they had gained control of the areas where the fighting took place and recovered weapons in their operations.
Separately, media sources suggest that suspected CODECO militants killed at least 16 civilians in an attack on Tuesday night (local time) in Mambisa village in Djugu territory.
Similar militant attacks and security operations are possible in the region over the near term.
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.
Individuals in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
