Iraq News Alert

Coalition airstrikes kill 19 IS militants south of Makhmour (Erbil province) on June 3; further security operations and counter attacks possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/5/2020, 12:00 AM until 6/7/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Baghdad). COUNTRY/REGION Makhmour (Erbil province)

US-led coalition forces conducted 26 airstrikes targeting Islamic State (IS) militant positions in the Qarachokh Mountains south of Makhmour (Erbil province) on Wednesday, June 3. According to media sources, suspected 46 IS hideouts were also destroyed in the operations. The operations were conducted in coordination with information provided by the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS).

Further security operations and retaliatory attacks by IS militants are likely in Iraq over the near term

Although former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq. IS militants continue to carry out attacks, notably against security forces. High-profile attacks often prompt equally significant security responses, including enhanced checkpoint operations and more proactive operations, with resulting effects on transit.

Individuals in Iraq are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
