Six people were killed and three others wounded during an attack by an unidentified group of armed militants in Kabingu (North Kivu province) on the night (local time) of Thursday, June 4, to Friday, June 5. The gunmen raided the Kabingu mining quarry and opened fire on people digging there. Local officials have attributed the attack to combatants fighting under the self-proclaimed General Matata, but this has not been confirmed.
Further militant attacks are to be expected in North Kivu province over the near term.
Individuals in North Kivu province are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
A number of Western governments advise their citizens against travel to the east and northeast of the country due to poor security conditions, including the presence of armed groups and a high risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice should be sought prior to travel.
