At least ten security force personnel were killed during an ambush by Taliban militants in Zabul province on Friday, June 5. The incident occurred at around 09:00 (local time) on the Zabul-Kandahar highway near the city of Qalat (Zabul province). The militants also reportedly suffered casualties in the fighting, but no figure has been confirmed. Two military vehicles were destroyed in the attack.
Similar militant attacks and clashes between militants and security forces are possible in Zabul province over the near term.
Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage amid ongoing peace negotiations.
Individuals in Zabul province are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
