On Monday, June 8, heavy rain and associated flash flooding caused severe damage in several towns and villages north of the city of Olomouc in the northeastern region of the country. Water up to one meter (3ft) high damaged multiple buildings and vehicles and destroyed a road bridge. Emergency services rescued at least three dozen people from floodwaters and damaged buildings, while one individual was killed and one remains missing.
As of noon (local time), the situation is reportedly under control. Expect continued disruptions to transportation, power, and business operations as floodwaters subside and repairs are undertaken. A heightened presence of emergency services is to be expected amid ongoing recovery efforts.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate continuing disruptions, and never drive or walk through flooded streets. Floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products and present residual health hazards.
