Event

On Sunday, June 7, heavy fighting between government forces and separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) troops was reported in the vicinity of the Abyan province town of Ja'ar. Government forces reportedly took control of the town before being pushed out in a counterattack. Several combatants and civilians were killed in the fighting.

Further clashes are to be expected in the area in the near to medium-term.

Context

Southern Transitional Council (STC) separatists announced self-rule for Aden and other southern provinces at the end of April 2020.

Yemen is engaged in a complex and deadly conflict, ongoing since Houthi rebels entered into a civil war with the Yemeni government, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, in 2015. In total, more than 112,000 people have died in the fighting, including 12,600 civilians. More than 3 million people have been displaced.

Advice

Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with proper security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
