On Wednesday, June 10, two individuals were killed during a confrontation with Kenya Forest Service (KFS) rangers in Gatarakwa (Nyeri county) and suspected illegal loggers. According to reports, KFS officers intercepted two individuals suspected to have been logging inside South Laikipia Forest in Kieni West at approximately 18:00 (local time). The officers detained one individual, the other escaped and reportedly returned with a group of youths from nearby Nairutia (Nyeri county). Clashes erupted as the youths tried to rescue the detained individual; they torched a KFS motorcycle and reportedly attacked the officers. An officer fired into the crowd and at least two youths, including the one in custody, were shot dead. Reports also suggest that at least one KFS officer was wounded in the clashes. Local police have initiated investigations into the incident.
