The US Embassy in Bern issued a demonstration alert ahead of planned protests scheduled to occur in Basel, Bern, and Zürich on Saturday, June 13. Participants are gatherings to denounce racial discrimination and civil rights in the United States, amid ongoing unrest taking place following the police-related death of George Floyd in Minneapolis (Minnesota state) on May 25. The alert suggests that protesters in Basel are expected to gather at 14:00 (local time) at the Barfüsserplatz. Similarly in Bern, demonstrators will congregate in front of the Parliament building (Bundeshaus) at 14:00. In Zürich, participants will gather at 14:00 in the Stadelhofen district.
A heightened security presence and associated disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of the protests. Additional solidarity demonstrations cannot be ruled out in the coming days
George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired, and one has since been charged with murder. Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters gathered on May 26 to denounce the death and actions of the police officers. Clashes ensued between protesters and riot police; with demonstrators throwing bricks and projectiles at police and police property, and police responding with tear gas and rubber bullets as they attempted to disperse the crowds. Associated protests over racial inequality, discrimination, and police brutality have since spread to a number of cities across the US and internationally.
Individuals in Switzerland are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
