Police clashed with mourners in the Kadiju village area of Kisumu (Kisumu county) on Friday, June 12. Mourners reportedly gathered en mass during a funeral being held for a deceased singer, Bernard Obonyo, and forced the police officers guarding the event to flee. The mourners removed Obonyo's casket from the grave and brought it to a field near Kadiju Primary School and demanded that the burial be postponed to allow for a more fitting ceremony as current coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions only allow for funerals to occurred within 24 hours of death and with five relatives in attendance. Security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowd. On Thursday, June 13, mourners had attempted to storm Port Florence Hospital where Obonyo's body was being held; however, they were repelled police. A further standoff was reported following the arrival of Obonyo's body at his home in the Chiga area prior to its arrival in Kadiju village.
Further unrest regarding Obonyo's burial, and further clashes between mourners and police, cannot be ruled out.
Individuals in Kisumu are advised to monitor developments, avoid demonstrations, anticipate a heightened security presence near protest sites, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
