Afghanistan: Armed attack kills eight in Khost province June 12

Afghanistan News Alert

Unidentified gunmen kill eight in an armed attack in Alisher district (Khost province) on June 12; further attacks likely in medium term

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/13/2020, 12:00 AM until 6/15/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Khost

Unidentified gunmen killed eight civilians in an attack in Alisher district (Khost province) on Friday evening (local time), 12 June. As of Saturday morning, June 13, there is no clear motive for the incident; however, one of those killed was reportedly Abdul Wali Ikhlas, a Hizb-i-Islami member and former parliamentary candidate. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Further attacks are likely in Khost province in the medium term.

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage amid ongoing peace negotiations.

Those in Khost province are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
