Anti-government groups clashed with police during demonstration in Paris on June 16; avoid all demonstrations

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/17/2020, 12:00 AM until 6/17/2020, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Paris

Event

On Tuesday, June 16, police clashed with violent anti-government groups after they reportedly attempted to join an otherwise peaceful demonstration by healthcare workers in front of the Les Invalides complex in central Paris. The clashes began when anarchic protesters known as the 'black bloc' turned up at the complex where thousands of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers were staging a demonstration for better wages and working conditions amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Tear gas was fired at the anti-government protesters after they began throwing projectiles at police and setting items alight. At least 16 arrests were made during the incident.

Further protests and policing operations are likely in the capital in the medium term.

Advice

Individuals in France are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
