As of Thursday, June 18, one person has been killed and a further three people are missing as the result of a landslide in Danba county (Sichuan province). Some 20,000 people have been displaced and 14 people rescued as a result of the adverse weather. Heavy rain has been impacting southwest China, particularly Sichuan, over the past 48-hours. Infrastructural damages were also reported in Danba, including a small local power station that was destroyed in the landslide, and houses have been damaged and roads blocked due to heavy rain.
Heavy rain has been forecast to continue to affect southwest China through Friday, June 19, with locally very heavy rain forecast over parts of Sichuan province. Up to date forecasts can be viewed on the China Meteorological Administration website.
Disruptions to travel and infrastructure are to be anticipated in the coming days as a result of the adverse weather.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate continuing disruptions, and never drive or walk through flooded streets. Floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products and present residual health hazards.
