Healthcare workers staged a strike on Thursday, June 18, at public hospitals across the country to demand improvements to hospital management and regulation of their employment status following changes due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The strike was organized by the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and reduced medical services to emergency operations only on Thursday. Demonstrators also gathered outside of the Health Ministry in Tunis to call for improved working conditions.
Further unrest regarding the issue, and associated disruptions, are possible in the near term.
Individuals are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate potential disruptions to the provision of medical services, and to avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution.
