Event

Clashes between local tribal forces and Houthi rebels have reportedly occurred in Al Bayda province on Wednesday, June 17, and Thursday, June 18, which have resulted in multiple casualties. According to media sources, Houthi rebels launched drone and missile attacks on the Radman district in the province on Wednesday. Reports suggest that the rebels deployed ground forces following the aerial assault, in efforts to suppress the local Al Awad tribal forces. On Thursday, fighting continued as the tribesmen pushed back the Houthi's advance toward Radman. Several Houthi vehicles were reportedly destroyed in Thursday's clashes.

Further fighting between the two forces is possible in the area over the near term.

Context

Clashes between local tribal forces and Houthi rebels have intensified in recent days. Tensions between the Al Awad tribe and Houthis have been ongoing for several months, after the Houthis killed a female tribal member, as well  as committing other alleged atrocities. Clashes and tensions are expected to continue in the near term; the Al Awad tribe have reportedly called on other tribes to mobilise to assist them.

Advice

Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments strongly advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with proper security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
