According to international media sources, three people have died following a stabbing incident in Reading's Forbury Gardens on Saturday, June 20, although neither the number of injured or fatalities have been officially confirmed by police. One suspect has been detained in relation to the incident that occurred at around 19:00 (local time). Thames Valley Police have stated that there is no indication that the incident is linked to a Black Lives Matter rally that was held in the gardens earlier on Saturday, after some initial reports suggested that the stabbings may have been related to the demonstration. However, reports do indicate that police and security services are looking at terror as a possible motivation for the incident, although this also remains unconfirmed.
The area around the gardens remains cordoned off and road closures in the vicinity are to be anticipated in the immediate term, along with a heightened security presence.
Members in Reading are advised to avoid Forbury Gardens and anticipate disruptions to overland travel in the immediate term. Follow authority advice and maintain a heightened sense of situational awareness. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to local authorities.
