Germany News Alert

Several injuries reported as rioters clash with security personnel in Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg state) June 20-21; avoid all gatherings as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/21/2020, 12:00 AM until 6/23/2020, 11:59 PM (Europe/Berlin). COUNTRY/REGION Stuttgart

Several police officers were injured amid riots in Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg state) overnight from Saturday, June 20, through to the early hours of Sunday, June 21. Local authorities have stated that several hundred people were involved in the riots, which took place around Schlossplatz, before subsiding at around 03:00 (local time). Several businesses were looted and damaged, and vehicles were vandalised. Some rioters were arrested amid the unrest. Police have reportedly stated that it is not clear why the riots occurred, although recent Black Lives Matter protests in Germany have seen clashes between protesters and security forces.

Some sources have suggested that clashes between police and youth groups took place last weekend; however, the unrest witnessed on June 20-21 was significantly more intense.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in Stuttgart in the immediate term, and further unrest is possible.

Individuals in Stuttgart are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
