Police declared on Sunday, June 21, that a fatal stabbing attack that occurred in Reading on Saturday, June 20, is now being treated as a terrorist incident. One individual, believed to be a Libyan national, was detained in connection with the incident, which is being investigated by counter-terrorism police. The stabbing occurred in Forbury Garden at 19:00 (local time) when the assailant attacked a group of people before being restrained by police. Three people were killed in the incident and at least three others sustained serious injuries. Police raided a suspect's flat on Basingstoke Road following the attack. A heightened security presence has been reported within central Reading.

The area around the gardens remains cordoned off and nearby roads have been closed, and heightened security presence is likely to continue in the immediate term.
