Afghanistan News Alert

Gunmen attack Nuristan governor’s convoy in Mahipar (Kabul province) on June 21; further attacks possible over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/21/2020, 12:00 AM until 6/23/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Mahipar (Kabul province)

Unidentified gunmen fired on the convoy of Nuristan governor, Hafiz Abdul Qayyum, in Mahipar (Kabul province) at approximately 07:00 (local time) on Sunday, June 21. One of Qayyum's bodyguards was killed in the attack and one other was wounded. Qayyum had been traveling to Kabul from Nuristan when the attack occurred. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage amid ongoing peace negotiations.

Those in Kabul province are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
