The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) announced on Sunday, June 21, that it was suspending operations and withdrawing all its staff from Baringo county due to security concerns. The decision comes after a confrontation at the Kampi Ya Samaki settlement on Friday, June 19, where relief food was looted and staff and volunteers harassed. Roadblocks were also set up by residents and seven KRCS vehicles carrying food were forced to turn back to Marigat, despite assurances that the consignment was headed to Turkana county and had nothing to do with the current inter-clan conflicts in Baringo.
Inter-communal clashes and associated violence and criminality are possible over the near term.
Around 4,000 people have been displaced by increasing insecurity in Baringo county. Violence between rival clans has led to ten deaths in the past week alone.
Individuals in Baringo county are advised to monitor the situation, remain vigilant for signs of intercommunal unrest and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
