5.9-magnitude earthquake recorded near Gorontalo; no tsunami warning in effect

On Tuesday, June 23, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.9 magnitude earthquake 97 km (60 miles) ESE of Gorontalo. The earthquake struck at a depth of 102km (63 miles) at 14:27 (local time). Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has noted that there are no immediate reports of damage and that, currently, no tsunami warning has been issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.  


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g., under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
