Security forces have killed four gunmen who attacked the Pakistan Stock Exchange in Karachi on Monday, June 29. The assailants reportedly killed two people and wounded several others, with civilian and security personnel among the casualties. According to media sources, the assailants who arrived by vehicle initially launched a grenade attack at the main gate of the building against security men posted outside the compound and then stormed the building firing sporadically. Security forces responded, killing the four assailants. The compound is in a high security zone and also houses head offices of private banks, financial institutions, and other businesses. Reports suggest the Pakistan Stock Exchange PAKS.PSX did not suspend trading during the attack. Militants from the Baloch Liberation Army have reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
A heightened security presence and disruptions in the area are to be anticipated in the near term. Further attacks are possible in the near term.
