Rocket attack on a market in Sangin district (Helmand province) kills 23 and wounds 15 civilians June 29; further attacks possible over the near term

At least 23 civilians were killed when four rockets struck an open-air cattle market in Sangin district (Helmand province) on Monday, June 29. A further 15 civilians were reportedly wounded in the incident, which occurred in the Zol Bazar area on Monday morning. It is not clear if the rockets were fired by Afghan forces or by militants, with neither side claiming responsibility.

A heightened security presence is expected in the area over the near term and further militant activity and security force operations are likely to continue in Helmand province in the medium term.


Those in Helmand province are advised to monitor developments in their own particular area of operations through a range of multi-source intelligence advisories and should heed all instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments.
