Memphis police reportedly arrested at least 12 demonstrators as they cleared a campout at Civic Center Plaza on Wednesday, July 1. The campout was organized by several protest groups, including the Poor People's Campaign and the Memphis-Midsouth Democratic Socialists of America, with participants having occupied the space for nearly two weeks. According to police, the campout was dispersed to allow renovation works to City Hall. However, protesters were later informed that they were free to continue the demonstration elsewhere on the plaza. It is reported that some of them remain gathered there.
A heightened security presence and localized travel disruptions are to be anticipated in the vicinity of the campout.
Those in Memphis are advised to avoid the above area, anticipate localized disruptions, and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
