Police clashed with a group of men in the Makindye area of Kampala on the evening of Thursday, July 2, amid the suspected illegal eviction of local residents. The group of around 20 people, armed with machetes, clubs, and other melee weapons, had allegedly been hired to evict nine families from a housing complex in the Kyampa Zone, and had begun attacking residents when police intervened. At least one person was killed as police fired warning shots to disperse the group, but it is currently unclear whether the officers were attacked.
Further police operations are possible in the area in the near term.
Those in Kampala are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests, demonstrations, and political gatherings, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
