Saudi air defenses intercept several Houthi drones on July 3; further attacks likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/3/2020, 12:00 AM until 7/10/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Aden). COUNTRY/REGION Yemen

On Friday, July 3, Saudi Arabian air defenses reportedly intercepted four Houthi drones in Yemeni airspace. The Saudi-led coalition announced that the drones were shot down before crossing into Saudi Arabia. However, Houthi spokesman Yahya Saria stated that the drones had hit their targets, which were allegedly a control room at Najran airport, a weapons facilities in King Khalid air base, as well as other military targets. However, this is yet to be confirmed.

Further drone attacks and retaliatory airstrikes are to be expected in the near to medium-term.

Yemen is engaged in a complex and multifaceted conflict, ongoing since Houthi rebels entered a civil war with the Yemeni government, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, in 2015. The Saudi-led coalition has carried out thousands of airstrikes in Yemen since its intervention began. Hundreds of Yemeni civilians have been killed in the strikes, which have hit schools, hospitals, and markets, in addition to Houthi militant positions and personnel. In total, more than 10,000 Yemenis have died in the fighting and some 3 million have been displaced.

Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments strongly advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with proper security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
