Eight policemen killed in encounter with gang members in a village in Kanpur district (Uttar Pradesh) on July 3; anticipate a heightened security presence

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/5/2020, 12:00 AM until 7/7/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kolkata). COUNTRY/REGION Kanpur

Eight Indian policemen were killed during a raid in a village in Kanpur district (Uttar Pradesh) on Friday morning, July 3. Seven more policemen were injured and one is believed to be in critical condition. Suspected gang members opened fire on the officers during a raid in search of notorious local gangster Vikas Dubey. A police spokesperson stated that the gang members managed to escape, but two of the assailants were killed in a separate shootout when officers pursued them. Two policemen were also injured in the second incident.

Security forces have allegedly raided over 100 locations in 48 hours as of Sunday, July 5, and a cash reward is being offered for information on Dubey's whereabouts.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the vicinity of the incident in the immediate term.

Encounters between suspected criminals and security forces are not uncommon in Uttar Pradesh. In March 2017 Yogi Adityananth was elected as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and he vowed to crackdown on crime amid increasing levels of criminality. Since this vow, a number of alleged extra-judicial killings have taken place, and gun and drug crime remains a serious issue in parts of the state.

Individuals are advised to avoid the vicinity of the incident, maintain vigilance, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities.
