A rocket was fired towards the Baghdad Green Zone from the Ali al-Saleh area of the city on Sunday, July 5. Reports suggest that a child was injured by a fragment of the rocket in the Green Zone; however, it is currently unclear if this was the result of the rocket making an impact or following its reported interception by US air defense systems installed at the US Embassy. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack at this time. On Sunday, the Iraqi military stated that they had prevented a Katyusha rocket from being launched at the Taji military base (Baghdad province), which hosts US troops.
Similar attacks targeting US facilities are possible in Iraq over the near term.
Individuals in the area are advised to monitor developments, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
