Event

Rescue operations continue in the Kumamoto region as flooding and the risk of further landslides hampered efforts of the emergency operations in the area on Sunday morning (local time), July 5. At least 20 people have been confirmed or presumed dead in southern Japan, with most victims being residents of elderly home facilities in Kuma Village (Kumamoto region). The fire brigade, up to 10,000 defense troops, and the coast guard are currently working to reach to those who are still stranded, especially worst-affected areas surrounding the Kuma river.

As a result of flooding in the area, at least 6000 homes have no electricity and numerous others had their communication lines cut in Kumamoto. The Japan Meteorological Agency maintains the alerts for possible further landslides across the region of Kumamoto active as of Sunday morning.

Disruptions to travel and utilities are to be anticipated in the coming days as a result of the adverse weather.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
