Egypt announced on Saturday, July 4, that it will hold its senate elections on August 11 and 12 to vote for a new second parliamentary chamber. The results of the elections, which will establish two-thirds of the Council of Senators, will be announced on August 19. The president will appoint those who will fill the remaining seats of the council. The government announced that preparations are underway to implement precautionary measures amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The wearing of face masks and the adherence to social distancing measures will be compulsory at polling stations.
Political rallies and demonstrations may be expected in the weeks leading up to the election. Protests are also possible at polling stations on the day of the election.
Individuals in Egypt more generally are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all large public gatherings as a precaution, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments, and refrain from discussing political topics in public or on social media.
