Dozens of people gathered to demonstrate near the US embassy in Beit Aaoukar (Mazraat Deir Aaoukar; Mount Lebanon province) on Saturday, July 4. Participants were calling for US support for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559. Barriers were installed on roads leading to the embassy, and a heightened security presence was reported in the area. No clashes were reported and the demonstration seemingly passed off peacefully.
Further protests over the issue are possible in the medium term.
The 1559 Resolution was passed in 2004 and aimed to reaffirm the council's call for the strict respect of Lebanon's sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity, and political independence under the sole and exclusive authority of the Government of Lebanon throughout the country, among other features. The full version of the resolution can be viewed here.
Individuals in Beit Aaoukar are advised to monitor developments, avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings, anticipate a heightened security presence near protest sites, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
