Hundreds of firefighters were deployed to extinguish a forest fire in the Gallipoli peninsula on Monday, July 6. Two villages, Yalova and Kumkoy (Eceabat district), close to where the fire broke out were evacuated as a precaution. Reports indicate that the fires caused maritime traffic in the Canakkale straits to be suspended. There have been no reports of casualties currently.
Further fires are possible in the near term, presenting a risk of travel disruptions in affected areas.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, keep abreast of warnings, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, confirm road conditions prior to travelling, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities, particularly evacuation orders.
