Police fired tear gas and arrested multiple protesters in downtown Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon, July 7. Protesters had gathered to denounce police brutality during the lockdown imposed by authorities due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Activists marched towards downtown Nairobi after gathering in other areas of the city; however, police dispersed most protesters before they were able to reach their destination. Police used tear gas to disperse groups that reached the city center and made several arrests.
A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in central Nairobi in the near term, as well as associated transportation disruptions.
Those in Nairobi are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
