Russia News Alert

Eight journalists arrested in Moscow on July 7 amid demonstrations condemning the arrest of prominent former journalist: further protests possible in Moscow and other cities

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/6/2020, 11:00 PM until 7/10/2020, 10:59 PM (Europe/Moscow). COUNTRY/REGION Moscow, Russia

Event

At least eight journalists were arrested in Moscow on Tuesday, July 7, amid demonstrations against the arrest of former journalist Ivan Safronov Jr. Reportedly, protesting journalists carried out peaceful single-person demonstrations near the Federal Security Service (FSB) headquarters.

Separately, journalist Taisiya Bekbulatova was arrested after security personnel raided her flat in Moscow on Tuesday. It is believed that she is a friend of Safronov.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the vicinity of the FSB headquarters, and further demonstrations are possible in the coming days.

Context

Safronov was arrested on July 7 by FSB personnel and faces treason charges for alleged spying for a NATO country. Safronov works as an advisor for the head of the Russian space agency, but his arrest is purportedly not linked to his current position at the agency. Safronov could face up to 20 years imprisonment if found guilty.

Advice

Individuals in Moscow, and Russia more generally, are advised to avoid all public demonstrations due to the risk of arrest, refrain from discussing political subjects in public or on social media, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate localized disruption near any protest sites.
