At least three police officers were killed on the morning of Wednesday, July 8, in a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) attack on the police headquarters of Kandahar's Shah Wali Kot district. The driver of the vehicle was reportedly shot by security forces before the vehicle entered the compound at around 04:00 (local time), but was able to detonate the device, causing extensive damage to several nearby buildings. At least 18 other people were injured in the blast, including an unconfirmed number of civilians. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Security and clean-up operations are ongoing in the area and are likely to cause localized disruption in the near term.
Those in Kandahar province are advised to monitor developments in their own particular area of operations through a range of multi-source intelligence advisories and should heed all instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
