Yemen: Ballistic missile strike in Marib injures several civilians July 8

Yemen News Alert

Houthi ballistic missile hits residential area of Marib on July 8, injuring several civilians: further missile attacks likely in medium term

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/9/2020, 12:00 AM until 7/11/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Aden). COUNTRY/REGION Ma’rib (Ma’rib province)

Event

At least two people were injured on the evening of Wednesday, July 8, when a ballistic missile launched by Houthi rebels struck a residential area in the central city of Marib. Several properties in the Rawda area of the city were severely damaged in the strike, which coalition sources stated was launched from Houthi-controlled territory in the west of the country. However, there have been no confirmed reports of fatalities.

Further Houthi missile, rocket, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strikes targeting major urban centers in western and central Yemen are likely in the medium term.

Context

Yemen is engaged in a complex and multifaceted conflict, ongoing since Houthi rebels entered a civil war with the Yemeni government, which is supported by a Saudi-led coalition, in 2015. Houthi rebels have launched hundreds of missile, rocket, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks targeting coalition forces and civilian population centers in the west and center of the country, particularly around Marib, throughout the conflict. Although many of these have been intercepted by coalition air defenses, hundreds of civilians have been killed in Houthi missile strikes.

Advice

Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments strongly advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with extensive security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
