Suspected militant ambush kills two in Shariff Aguak (Maguindanao province) on July 9; further clashes likely in southern regions over the near term

Local media sources report on Thursday, July 9, that a Philippine National Police (PNP) officer and a civilian were killed in an explosion and subsequent ambush in Shariff Aguak (Maguindanao province) late in the evening (local time). Four other PNP officers were reportedly injured in the explosion, which occurred near the Maguindanao Provincial Police Office. The wounded have been transferred to the Maguindanao Provincial Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The PNP has yet to identify the motive and group responsible for the attack.

Further security operations, as well as clashes between security forces and militants, are possible in Maguindanao province in the near term.


The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) is an Islamist militant organization and Moro secessionist group active in the Mindanao region and is often responsible for such attacks. The group has been active since 2008 when it split from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).


Individuals in Maguindanao are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for potential militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
