A large fire caused by an explosion onboard a US military ship at the San Diego Naval Base is still ablaze as of Sunday afternoon, July 12, and reports indicate at least 18 sailors have been taken to hospital with minor injuries. Firefighters reportedly responded to the initial alarm at around 09:00 (local time). The cause of the explosion is not clear at this time; however, some reports suggest the ship was undergoing maintenance and this may have led to the explosion.

A heightened security and emergency services presence is to be anticipated in the area in the immediate term, and disruptions to overland transportation are likely.
