Government officials in Assam state announced on Thursday, July 16, that the death toll across multiple districts has increased following recent monsoon-related flooding. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has stated that the current death toll from four weeks of flooding stands at 66 people, with recent increases in the districts of Morigaon, Barpeta, Sonitpur, and Golaghat. Floodwaters have also damaged 46,000 hectares (113,668 acres) of agricultural land and some 9000 people are taking shelter in temporary relief camps. Dhemaji and Barpeta are among the worst affected districts.

Flooding, landslides, and transportation and business disruptions, as well as disruptions to power and communications services, are expected in Assam state in the coming days.

Those in Assam are advised to monitor local weather reports in the medium term, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate power and transportation disruptions, and avoid wading or driving through floodwater.
