On the evening of Wednesday, July 15, heavy rain in the Sicilian city of Palermo brought flash flooding to the city. Approximately 8cm (3 inches) of rain fell in the space of minutes, causing more than one meter of floodwater to gather in low-lying areas of the city. Rescue efforts were reportedly still underway in a flooded underpass on the morning of Thursday, July 16, where several vehicles were submerged. While media reports indicate that two people have died, police have stated that no individuals have yet been reported missing. Two children have been hospitalized due to suspected hypothermia.
Disruptions to travel and utilities are to be anticipated in the coming days as a result of the flooding.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
